The season started on April 24 when Johns Waters of Whitesville, NY won at Utica-Rome in the Prelude to the Gnome Cup season opener. The veteran driver held off Bryce Davis of Hornell, NY and Sam Pennachio of Niagara Falls, Ont. to earn the victory.

If the 3rd edition of the Gnome Cup is anywhere near as exciting as the sophomore 2015 version, fans will certainly be thrilled. Utica, NY native Aaron Jacobs upset a very talented field of Go Nuclear tour drivers to earn an impressive victory. Last season’s event attracted 32 cars to compete for 24 starting positions at the big half-mile oval.

Trenton, Ont. native Charlie Sandercock won the inaugural edition of the race in 2014, forecasting his series championship, as he defeated Dale Caswell and Dustin Waters at the front of the field.

Rick Miller is the only other winner at Utica-Rome in the series’ six-year history when he parked in Victory Lane on July 21, 2013.

A large field is expected once again as several drivers look to make their season debut on the tour while several others hope to build on a successful debut last month.

The event, presented by Sunoco Race Fuels, also features the Race of Champions Big-Block Modifieds, Pro Stocks and Novice 602 Sportsman. Gates open at 3:00pm for the 5:30pm start time with hot laps scheduled for 5:00pm. Adult admission is just $20. Additional event information is available online at www.uticaromespeedway.com.
